Moscow: The Russian military company Wagner has declared complete dominance over the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, according to reports from Al Jazeera. President Vladimir Putin of Russia extended his congratulations to the troops and the mercenary group Wagner on their capture of the eastern city.
Russian Assertion of Control:
Russia’s announcement on Saturday came shortly after Kiev acknowledged the critical situation in Bakhmut while stating that fighting was still ongoing in the city. If Wagner’s claim proves accurate, it will mark Russia’s most significant triumph thus far in the Ukraine conflict. International media sources have reported substantial losses suffered by both Russia and Ukraine during the ongoing war in Bakhmut.
Bakhmut’s Significance and Battle Impact:
Bakhmut, previously a salt-mining town with a population of 70,000, has witnessed some of the lengthiest and most brutal clashes during Russia’s 15-month engagement in Ukraine. The fall of Bakhmut has dealt heavy blows to both Russia and Ukraine.
Russian Defense Ministry’s Statement:
The Russian Defense Ministry stated in a release that the city of Artemovsk (formerly known as Bakhmut) was successfully liberated through the coordinated offensive operations of the Wagner assault units, with support from artillery and the air force of the Southern Unit.
Russian President’s Recognition and Awards:
According to Russian media, the Kremlin’s statement mentioned President Vladimir Putin’s congratulations to Wagner’s assault units, as well as all personnel serving in the Russian Armed Forces units. Furthermore, the Russian president announced awards for distinguished performers.
Ukraine’s Response and City’s Devastation:
On the other hand, Ukraine’s deputy defense minister dismissed the claim made by Russia but acknowledged the critical state of affairs in the city. Western officials, as reported by the BBC, estimate that between 20,000 and 30,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded in Bakhmut, while the Ukrainian military has also incurred significant losses. The city’s infrastructure has been severely devastated, with scarcely any buildings remaining and the complete disappearance of the entire population.
The claim by Russian military contractor Wagner asserting full control over Bakhmut, an eastern Ukrainian city, has intensified the ongoing conflict. While Ukraine’s deputy defense minister denies the claim, both Russia and Ukraine have suffered substantial casualties in the protracted war. The fall of Bakhmut represents a significant development in the Ukraine conflict, with the city’s infrastructure in ruins and its population displaced.
