SEOUL, South Korea: South Korean automaker Hyundai says the company has begun work on a test version of a rover to explore the moon.

Last year, the local company from the capital Seoul signed a partnership agreement with six Korean research institutes from the aerospace sector, with the aim of working to solve the problem of mobility for research on the surface of the moon. Had to do.

The group aims to build an initial test unit in the second half of 2024 with the full and final model to be launched in 2027.

In June last year, South Korea launched the country’s first rocket to send a satellite into low-Earth orbit and now plans to send a robotic lander to the surface of the moon in 2031.

According to Hyundai, the company will put forward the information related to robotics and autonomous driving technologies in this matter. According to the plan, the components made by the company will be attached to the lower part of the rover while the upper part will contain the scientific payload necessary for research.

After the rover is completed, it will be landed at the Moon’s South Pole. The solar-powered autonomous rover is expected to weigh a little less than 71 kg.
