At least five people have been killed in Yemen’s southern, central and western regions due to floods following heavy rains this week.
According to Arab News, three people drowned while two passengers were rescued after a bus was swept away by floodwaters in Bihan district of Yemen’s southern province of Shabwah.
Roads and standing crops in fields were destroyed due to flooding due to heavy rains in Shabuh province.
Locals on Wednesday recovered the body of a soldier who died after being swept away by flood waters.
A soldier’s body was found near Ahour in Yemen’s southern Abyan governorate. The soldier died when his vehicle was submerged in flood waters. Two soldiers in the vehicle were rescued.
It is reported that two civilians were killed due to floods in South Yemen who were swept away by the strong current.
Videos on social media showed some Yemeni bus drivers trying to cross flooded roads in some areas, ignoring warning boards.
According to the report, at least 20 houses partially collapsed or submerged due to flooding in Al-Harithia, Al-Alia and Taiz areas, forcing residents to leave their homes.
The flood-affected people, showing their urgency, appealed for immediate assistance during Ramadan.
It should be noted that heavy rains and floods have killed dozens of Yemeni citizens in the past two years, while houses have been destroyed, camps for displaced people have been destroyed, and the spread of diseases such as cholera has increased.
Meanwhile, the National Meteorological Center has forecast rain and flooding in parts of Yemen this week and advised residents to avoid waterways.
On the other hand, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Yemen has reported that the floods have damaged infrastructure, affecting 31 families in the Taiz region.
It was reported that 9 thousand families across the country were affected by the flood situation last month.
The UN office warned that 22,000 people in Sana’a, Damar, Ab, Lahj, Hadramawt and Jouf could be at risk of heavy rains and floods in mid-April, and could also damage farms.
The weather warning said that these areas and most of the hilly areas should be prepared for more heavy rains and flooding in the coming week.
Displaced people are at risk of cholera outbreaks, and makeshift camps lack basic infrastructure for water, sanitation and hygiene, for which humanitarian aid has been appealed.
